Hormones that regulate the release of other hormones are called tropic hormones. Hormones may be regulated by other hormones, by glands and organs, and by a negative feedback mechanism. Sex hormones (androgens, estrogens, and progesterone), produced by male and female gonads, are examples of steroid hormones. Steroid hormones cause certain genes to be expressed or suppressed by influencing gene transcription within a cell.

These protein hormones are composed of amino acids. Hormones can be classified into two main types: peptide hormones and steroid hormones. In autocrine signaling, hormones don't travel to other cells but cause changes in the very cell that releases them. These travel a much shorter distance between where they're secreted and where they target. This type of signaling is called paracrine signaling. These hormones then diffuse to nearby target cells. Hormones act on local cells by being secreted into the interstitial fluid that surrounds cells. Not only can hormones affect distant cells, but they can also influence neighboring cells. For example, the pituitary gland near the brain secretes growth hormones affecting widespread areas of the body. This type of hormone signaling is described as endocrine signaling because the hormones influence target cells over a long distance from where they are secreted. When a hormone binds to a receptor, it causes changes within the cell that influence cellular function. Target cell receptors can be located on the surface of the cell membrane or inside of the cell.
However, they influence only target cells, which have receptors for each specific hormone. Hormones that are circulated in the blood come in contact with a number of cells. Most hormones are carried by the circulatory system to different areas, where they influence specific cells and organs.
